Information products like ebooks and how-to guides can be a great way to make some money over time. If you’re thinking about creating a report of some sort, there are some things you should take into consideration before you dive in.

The first, and possibly most important step is to determine what questions you’re going to answer for your readers. If you’re already active in your niche, take a look through e mails you’ve received in the past, and see what questions people ask you most often. If you don’t get a lot of questions in your inbox, take some time and do a Google search for the topic you want to cover. generally speaking, the stuff that comes up at the top of that search is the stuff people are looking for. See what questions relate to those results, and make a note of them.

People love shortcuts. If you’re having trouble figuring out what topic to cover in your report, try coming up with a quick way to get a task done that your readers might not know about. Something along the lines of “Shortcuts to Potty Training Your Poodle” would work well, because potty training a dog can be a daunting task. Anything that makes that task easier is going to appeal to someone with a poodle puppy.

Now that you know what you’re writing about, it’s time to think about how to put it together. Use checklists, and step by step guides whenever possible. People want information that’s easy to consume, and checklists and step by step guides are a great way to provide easy to consume information.

While you’re working on your report, try to keep the reader in mind at all times. What benefit is reading this report going to have for the reader? Is it going to save them time? Help them make money? Keep those benefits in mind as you’re presenting your information to the reader. If the benefit for the reader is saving time, the over all flow and feel of your report should reflect that.

By carefully considering your niche, the reader, and their needs, you can create a solid report that will generate revenue for you over time. If you can help your readers to better their lives, save time, or make money, you can generate strong sales not just for the report in question, but all of the products in your catalog.
