What To Do With Your Professional Network
So you’ve taken the time to make some strong professional contacts, and cultivate good relationships with them. That’s great, but where do you go from there? How can your network help you succeed? Let’s take a look at a few ways you can tap into your professional network.
Before your network can work for you, they have to know a little bit about you, what you have to offer, and what you might need, and you just can’t rely on business cards alone to get all of that information across. Consider printing out some A4 leaflets about yourself, what you do, and what you need. On it’s own, a leaflet like this might just get tossed aside, so be sure to hand them out only when it’s appropriate. If you’re talking to a contact about business, hand them a leaflet. If you’re talking to a contact about fishing, save the leaflet for another day.
Whether you’re telling them about yourself in a leaflet, an email, or a conversation, there are two crucial things you need to convey. They need to know what you do, and what you need. Tell them about yourself, your background, and the services you offer. Be sure to be clear and concise when describing what you do, and what it means for your clients. If they have a clear picture of your offerings, they will be more likely to take you up on them, or refer you to a friend. When telling them about your needs, be sure to tell them exactly what you’re looking for and why. If they can’t help you, they might be able to refer someone who can.
It’s also a good idea to get a clear picture of their needs. If you can’t help them, someone in your professional network might be able to. If you send work to your contacts, they’ll be more likely to reciprocate, so don’t ignore your network’s needs, even if you’re not the one to fill them.
It probably goes without saying, but you should also make sure they can contact you easily. Make sure your contacts all have your up to date contact info, otherwise all of the other information you gave them, and got from them might just go to waste.
If you communicate your needs, and your offerings to your professional network, and keep their needs in mind, you’ll be able to take advantage of all of the benefits a good set of contacts has to offer. Put yourself out there, and you’ll see the rewards sooner than you think.
